Berea Court Costs Too Much

August 1, 2007 – 9:27 am

Let’s face it, going to court is costly, and a big waste of money. But judges have now ruled that the fees imposed by the Berea court system are way too high. Now some beleaguered convicts may even be owed a refund.

Drunken drivers, barroom brawlers and speeders could soon be getting a rebate from a few local courts.

That’s because in sentencing misdemeanor offenders, the courts have been overcharging several hundred dollars for court costs.

A state appeals court has slapped the Berea Municipal Court for charging a Strongsville man “excessive” fees, a ruling that jeopardizes similar court-cost structures in communities across Ohio.

“I think this decision will impact courts like Rocky River and Berea all over the state,” said lawyer Patrick Leneghan, who won the appeal. “It will cost them tens of thousands of dollars a month. They’re making a fortune on court costs.”

It turns out some serious over-charging has been going on.
