It’s been a while coming and the 2008 nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have been announced, and they aren’t any of the bands that readers have really suggested as their choices. It won’t be Rush, REO Speedwagon, Journey, AC/DC, The Cars or Chicago to take their place in the HOF..
The 2008 Rock and Roll nominees for 2008 are Madonna, The Beastie Boys, John Mellancamp, Donna Summer, Chic, Afrika Bambaataa, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, the original British Invasion combo The Dave Clark Five and surf rock instrumentalists The Ventures.
What are your thoughts on this years nominees? To me some Rock greats have been overlooked
for yet another year. What say you?

Hello everyone,
I’d really love to see the following artists get into the Hall of Fame. Those artists are:
Dave Clark 5
Tommy James
The Eagles
Chicago
The reasons being that their music has stood the test of time. Those songs still sound just as great now as it did way back when. Guess I’m like everyone else it’s hard to forget those songs and the great voices that were a part of those years !!!! From everything I’ve ever read and the e-mails I’ve been sent by certain friends of mine, I have to agree that more than likely the fans and music lovers don’t get to pick who gets in and who doesn’t. Somehow that sounds and seems more than unfair, if it weren’t for the music lovers and music fans all these years who’d get those music awards, hit songs, etc etc etc ? They’ve never failed me when it came to their albums and singles releases and I couldn’t have asked for more from my favorite artists. Could you or would you ever have asked for more than that from your favorite artists? I for one thank God for their talents, time and money spent to make those records, 8 track tapes, cassettes etc etc and the tours that they’ve done.

HOWEVER.. THE EAGLES ARE NOT NEARLY DONE.. THEY WILL SURELY GET THERE..
YOU MUST AGREE THAT THE ‘VENTURES’ SHOULD BE THERE….
EVERY GUITAR PLAYER WHO REALLY PLAYS ROCK.. WILL PLAY WIPEOUT.. SLEEPWALK .. AND OR SOMEOTHER INSTRUMENTAL THAT THE VENTURES PLAY.. THEY ARE AN ICON IN THE GUITAR INDUSTRY…

The Ventures rank as the 6th best pop album performer for the decade of the 1960s, 4th among rockers after Presley, the Beatles, and Ray Charles (Joel Whitburn’s Top Pop Albums). From 1960 to 1972, they charted 37 albums plus a Christmas album. They also charted 14 singles during the 1960s.
They were the first act to chart a song using the fuzztone (distortion box) on the electric guitar, that being 1962’s “2,000 Pound Bee”.
Encyclopedia Brittanica on-line says the Ventures served as the prototype for all the guitar bands which followed.
One of the chart albums was 1965’s “Play Guitar with the Ventures”. This was the first musical instrument instruction album ever to chart. Many later rock stars cut their teeth on this album.
Among the many artists who have publically identified the Ventures as a favorite or an influence are George Harrison (Beatles), Joe Walsh (James Gang, Eagles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Stephen Stills, Roger Fisher (Heart), Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Peter Frampton, Tom Hamilton and Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Keith Moon (The Who), Max Weinberg, Allan White (Yes), and Elton John. Both Jeff Baxter (Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan) and Gene Simmons (Kiss) were early members of the Ventures fan club. The list goes on and on.
About doggone time for some HOF recognition. How were they ignored for the first 21 years of their eligibility?

I think all 9 nominees belong in and are highly deserving, though The Dave Clark 5, Leonard Cohen, Donna Summer, and The Ventures are long overdue for membership. According to one credible article, the DC5 placed 5th in votes last year but were personally nixed by Jann Wenner in order to make sure a rap act got in (Grandmaster Flash). While I think GF is also deserving, that says a lot for any semblance of fairness here — they should have all been accepted in.
By the way, anyone clamoring for AC/DC to get in should be aware that they’re in already…..

How can Donna Summer, Chic, and Madonna get into the HOF before RUSH. If most of your CDs end up in Big Lots music section they should not be considered (Donna Summer, Chic) or “artist” that appeal to 12 year old girls (Madonna). Disco was a flash in the pan and it’s an insult to recognize these non contributory “artist” ahead of the Greats that have stood the test of time.
