If you are looking for some Island fun, but don’t want to spend and arm and a leg going to Caribbean,
it’s a perfect time to plan a trip to Lake Eries’s own Kelley’s Island.

Kelley’s Island offers history, entertainment and just an overall relaxing atmosphere. Things are kept simple.
You can rent a bike or a golf cart to explore the Island, that is a little larger than 4 square miles.

This is a nature lovers oasis. Kelley’s Island is the home to the “Glacial Grooves” . These grooves were carved in the limestone some 18,000 years ago. Some of the Devonian limestone contains marine fossils that are 350 to 400 MILLION years old. Access is protected by a fence, but visitors can still get a breathtaking view of the quarry. There is no cost for admission and is open daily.

When the weather gets warmer, visitors might want to consider scuba diving at Kelley’s Island. The island is home to a number of shipwrecks that took place from 1847- 1911. This gives scuba divers a unique look at the sunken history surrounding the Island.

The Island also offers unique dining and shopping. You won’t find any big box shopping or franchised restaurants.

If you are looking to extend your stay overnight (or for a few) there are a number of Bed and Breakfasts. You can also rent condos, cottages and homes or stay at Kelley’s Island State Park. At this time, there are no big box hotels or motels serving the area.

Getting there. If this island getaway sounds like a paradise filled with Rest and relaxation, you’ll need to take a ferry boat to get there. Ferries run daily from both Marblehead and Sandusky, Ohio.
