I just checked out the video for this. Interesting stuff. He was introduced by the leader of the City Club, who sounded much like he was giving a speech for a Hall of Fame inductee. Frank Jackson, he tells us, is one politician who has no interest in politics. Truthfully, he comes across as it. He speaks in a halting voice, and doesn’t appear like he did a ton of practice for speechmaking.

Jackson got right down to business in his speech, identifying problems in the current financial situation of Cleveland, which he referred to as a $1.1 billion enterprise. His speech followed some definite common sense principles in pointing out the incredible of need in Cleveland to improve economic development. Cleveland is a difficult place to do business, and he stated that it needs to improve so that more small businesses can do business with the City of Cleveland.

5 Year Capital Plan and Regional Economic Development

Jackson mentioned spending on strategic spending in capital. He emphasized that a regional approach is needed. He suggested co-operating with local suburbs to keep business in the area. He is also conducting a search for a Regional Economy Co-ordinator who will oversee regional economic development

Educational Excellence Needed

Jackson outlined a great number of initiatives that could be changed to encourage educating the 65,000 students still stuck in the struggling Cleveland City school system. He spent some time talking about safety in schools being paramount. He’s looking for a zero-tolerance violent policy for crime.

He also mentioned the need for an improved relationship between citizens and the police. He mentioned several initiatives he’s instituted to improve civil oversight of the police department.

Jackson did do an excellent job speaking at the end, and received a Standing “O” when he explained his speech was all talk unless he got results. He stated he had a commitment, and would make these changes a reality. Time will tell.
