It’s early on Sunday morning and the sun is bright, but the air is cool.
Cleveland weather
can be so unpredictable! Dick Goddard is always talking about crazy things like Alberta Clippers
(this means grab your jacket) and Nor’ Easters (this means hold on to your hat)
Nothing against Mr. Goddard, but he is an old timer that puts a whole different spin on weather reporting. Sometimes he talks to himself, and then the other anchor people have to sort of interupt him to bring the newscast back to reality. I guess that he just trying to do his job, and he does help a lot with homeless animals so he can’t be that bad.

My favorite event that he is involved with is the “Woolly Bear festival” it is held annually in Vermillion, Ohio in honor of the great creature, the woolly bear. This is a brown and black caterpillar that is supposed to be able to predict weather, depending on its color. I’m assuming this is why Dick Goddard is so fond of it.

My husband and I went to this festival a couple years back, and it was like the Sauerkraut festivals Fremont used to have. Lots of food, music, contests and games. And drunk people.
That was what we encountered first, an angry drunk boatman that screamed at us for parking in the wrong spot. I should have stuck my head out the window and snapped a photo of him in all of his nutty glory. The teenagers that were supposed to be directing traffic to the right parking spots sort of half apologized for the trouble.

Only in Ohio do you have festivals to honor caterpillars, but that is part of the charm of good old Ohio, the Buckeye State!

That and the everchanging weather…

**As an update, the 2005 WoollyBear Festival is going to be held on Sunday October 2 in
Vermilion. Hope to see you there!
